Voorhees College -- Women's History Month Celebration

Ms. Nina Sutton
Ms. Voorhees 2010-2011
The Center for Active Learning participated in the Women's History Month celebration at Voorhees College on March 24, 2011.  The presentation, entitled The Unknown Entrepeneur, retells the inception of black hair care in America via an examination of the entrepeneurship of Ms. Annie Malone and Madame CJ Walker.  The event was very well received.  In fact, Mr. Samuel Blackwell and Mr. Ulysses Williams or Voorhees College have extended an invitation to return next year.  Thank you Ms. Voorhees for your support!

Screening of "The Landlord" March 26th @ Brooklyn LaunchPad

The Kings County Cinema Society and The Center for Active Learning are cosponsoring a screening of The Landlord, starring Beau Bridges and Pearl Bailey.  The Landlord is a satirical exploration of the gentrification of a Park Slope neighborhood in the '70's, and has various themes which should stimulate  interesting discussion.  The screening will be held at Brooklyn LaunchPad, 721 Franklin Avenue, Brooklyn 11238 and will start at 5 PM.

ITVS - Community Cinema

I am so pleased to announce that The Center for Active Learning is a participant of the ITVS Community Cinema program to screen a documentary entitled  Me Facing Life--Cyntoia's Story, an exploration into the young life of a young woman sentenced to life in prison at 16 years old.   We are looking to host screenings of this film in a school or after school setting, as the film contains a message that speaks to today's youth.  This film is also very inspirational for adults that work with the youth population.

Me Facing Life is available for screening April 7 & 8, 2011, and there is no charge to the organization for scheduling a screening.  Youth will be engaged in a discussion about the film after the screening.  We are hoping to engage educators in this project who will incorporate the film screening into their classroom activities.  We also have an interest in screening the film in local juvenile detention centers.  Any organization interested in scheduling a screening should contact me at info@thecenterforactivelearning.org.

The Center for Active Learning launched its Learning in Motion Educational Film Series with a screening of The Defiant Ones. The film series is currently focused on diversity, an idea stimulated by an experience in a kosher Brooklyn eatery called Basil. Read more about the inspiration for the idea in the New York Times
